The Search for Barrie’s Top Dancer of 2009!


So You Think You Can Dance “Barrie ’s first annual event was a huge success with over 80 dancers auditioning for the title of Barrie ’s Top Dancer for 2009.  The talent was amazing and we were so delighted to have dancers auditioning from the ages of 7 to 50 years old in a wide variety of dance disciplines from hip hop to belly dance, African tribal dance, tap, ballet and among the favorites contemporary jazz, you name it we watched it. Our adjudicating panel of Rob Martin (Industry leading photographer for L.A.), Danny Davalos (OIP Productions- Toronto), Mark Samuels (Do Dat Entertainment-Toronto) and Monica Tranter (founder of Tranter Institute and professional dancer for over 20 years) brought a great mix of enthusiasm, positive criticism and straight to the point insight for the dancers.  The adjudicators were overwhelmed with the amount of hidden talent in Barrie

Our top twenty two dancers performed for a standing room only crowd at the Celebrate Barrie Festival on Saturday June 6th, 2009. Prizes were awarded to the top four dancers - Jr. Category (under 13 years of age) winner, Senior Category (over 13 years of age) winner, 1st runner

up overall and Barrie ’s Top Dancer.

Barrie’s top dancers will receive prizes including dance wear from The Skater’s Choice 510 Bryne Drive Barrie, summer intensive scholarship workshops from OIP Dance of Toronto and Tranter Institute 610 Huronia Rd. Barrie.  The Top Dancer will also receive a professional photo shoot from Rob Martin Photography and representation from Ten Talent agency 610 Huronia Rd. Barrie , to help launch them into a variety of exciting industry opportunities.  The top dancers will have the opportunity to be featured in upcoming performance events throughout the Barrie area.

 

Tranter Institute would also like to thank all participants and look forward to a even larger event in 2010!!!

 

 

SOME OF THE COMMON QUESTIONS

  1. When do I register? Sign in is just like what you see on the Canadian Series.  Monday at 10am or Thursday at 2pm.  You arrive register and wait until your time.  First in line is first to be seen!
  2. How do I register? You can register the day of or email mona@tranterinstitute.com and she will send your registration form to you.  All registration forms are handed in at time of sign in Monday at 10am or Thursday at 2pm.
  3. Can I audition with more than one piece? Many dancers are coming with solos, duets and group numbers.  You can audition as many times in as many disciplines as your wish.  A registration fee will apply for all entries.
  4. Do I do one or both dates? You pick one of the two dates to audition. Unless you have more then one number being shown.  Then you will have to come to the second day and show that number.
  5. Do I need to prepare a number? Yes, all auditions will require a dance number in whatever disciplie you choose.  The Dancer or group must bring music in as well.
  6. What if I am not form a studio but dance in my home? Anyone who thinks they can dance is welcome to come!  Show us your skills!
  7. Is there an age limit? Since this is a city run event , the city wants to see all ages!  The categories are Junior 6-12 years, Senior 14-17years and open 18 and up!
  8. Can groups auditions?  Yes
  9. What does the registration fee include? The fee includes your audtion as well as one workshop class with the amazing choreographers.  Please see schedule for the times of your age level.
  10. When do we sign up for the workshop class? When you sign in, we will put you in the class that is for your age category!
  11. What Happens if I make the Top 30? If you make the top 30 you will be on the main stage at the "Celebrate Barrie" event June 6th from 5:00-8:30pm.  You will be required to perform the dance you did at your audition as well you are required to attend the Choroegraphy class of Mark Samuels to perform this piece in the show.
  12. What are some of the Prizes? Tranter Institute, Do Dat enetrtainment and OIP Dance will be offering summer intensive scholarships, dance passes, dancewear, Talent representation, photoshoots with professional photographers.  Just being apart of the top 30 will bring so much exposure as well to helping the dancer reach the next level!

 

Registration Information

ENTRANCE INFORMATION

Anyone can compete in as many disciplines as desired.  Independents, dance studios and dance crews welcome. The more numbers you audition, the more chances you will have to be seen Prior to the finals on June 6th, all entrants can audition in any of the chosen categories of dance - ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, music theatre, modern, hip hop, break dance, pop & lock, Latin, ballroom & swing.

 

ENTRANCE LEVELS

Level 1 - Kids……Dancers aged 6 to 12 years.

Level 2 - Teens….Dancers aged 13-18 years.

Level 3 - Open…..Dancers 19 years.

If you are entering groups, lines or crews you must fit into one of the three categories.

 

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS / FEES

$40.00 per person per entry includes Dance Audition & 1 Workshop Class. (Workshop class not mandatory but is recommended)

Additional Workshop Classes are available for dancers at an additional fee of $20.00 per person/per workshop.  Please see workshop schedule for details.

 

Workshop Schedule

Junior and senior level workshop classes are based on entrance ages as listed above.  An additional fee of $20.00 per class will be applicable for extra classes dancers wish to be in.

 

9:30-10:45am-Junior Jazz- Monica Tranter

11:00-12:15pm-Senior/Open Jazz- Monica Tranter

12:30-1:45pm-Junior Hip Hop-Mark Samuels

2:00-3:15pm-Senior/Open Hip Hop- Danny Davalos

3:15-4:15pm-Marks Repertoire- Mark Samuels

 

The Marks repertoire class is open to all dancers but they should expect that it will be at an intermediate to advanced dance level.

 

 

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE BARRIE

Registration will be accepted up until one hour prior to audition start times, if space is permitted.

All entries are to be paid in full at time of registration and are NON REFUNDABLE.  All fees are to be paid by Visa/Master Card, American Express, certified cheque, money order or cash. Please see payment information listed below.

 

AUDITION RULES & REGULATIONS

 

  • All audition pieces must not exceed 3 minutes in length.
  • Candidates must audition in attire well suited for their performance piece.
  • All music must be provided on CD format.  One piece only on CD  (it is recommended that a second CD be brought for back up).
  • Candidates must label their music CD with their name, phone number and title of performance piece(s).
  • All clothing must be logo free.
  • Music which contains explicit lyrics will not be allowed.
  • If you are selected as a top 30 finalist you must be available for Celebrate Barrie’s SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE BARRIE  Final Showcase where the winner will be selected. 

 

  • The Final Showcase will be held at Barrie’s Centennial Park on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 from 5pm to   8 pm.

 

 

JUDGING PANEL

Our panel of judges are professionals who have been in this industry for 15-30 years. They include some of Canada’s top choreographers, dancers, agents and photographers. They can be seen in film and television, reality shows, music videos and commercials. These professionals work and train in New York and L. A. working with some of the Stars in the Industry. The panel is hoping to find some of the hidden talent in Barrie and area and help guide them to a future in the Entertainment Industry!

WORKSHOP FACULTY

Monica Tranter

Bright, dynamic and charismatic are just a few of the adjectives that describe Monica.  A full member (Ballet-Chechetti) with the Canadian Dance Teachers Association, full member Dance Educators of America (jazz and tap),  she has trained with the National Ballet of Canada, "Steps" on Broadway,  Broadway Dance Center and is a former graduate of and performer for Canada's Randolph Dance Academy for the Performing Arts. The former head of the Dance Department for St. Lawrence College’s music theatre performance program, she acted as head choreographer for their music theatre touring season. Monica who owns and operates Tranter Institute and Ten Talent Management in Barrie was a key player in the Toronto dance and talent scene with her highly renowned training center MBS Performing Arts Institute.

She has trained and managed some of Canada’s leading singers, dancers and actors and has garnered recognition for her work in the film industry with Take the Lead, Honey, Chicago, and Step Up just to name a few.  This talent powerhouse has worked with top performers including Janet Jackson, Shakira, Gwen Stefani, Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Dan Ackroyd, The Tragically Hip, and Canadian Idols Gary Beals and Ryan Malcolm.

Rudi Quammie Williams

Rudi is an arts and business professional that has dedicated much of his time to the study of percussion instruments and the business of the arts. Quammie is a graduate of the Schulich School of Business’s M.B.A. program with specialization in Arts and Media Management as well as York University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program.  As a business leader, professional performer,a student and teacher of African and African Diasporic music, Quammie has touched many with his talents.

He treasures the experiences he has had. They have become the creative building blocks that allow him to contribute to the presentation and communication of culture and arts in their many manifestations for the betterment of all.

 


Mark Samuels

Dancing has always been a part of Mark Samuels’s life
and with Do Dat Entertainment, Toronto’s premiere          
dance company; he turned his passion into a career.  
 
Samuels is a sought after choreographer and dancer 
known for his professionalism, positive attitude, and 
dancing abilities.  Samuels joined Do Dat Entertainment
in 1996, and since then performed with top musicians 
and entertainers, such as Eva Avila, Nelly Furtado, and 
Jully Black.  His work in music video and television 
productions include artists such as Missy Elliot, 
Shawn Desman, and Maestro.  
 
Samuels has also worked extensively with many 
American musicians, such as Mariah Carey, Wyclef 
Jean, and Nivea.  His proudest accomplishments 
consist of the Video Game Awards with Kelis (2004), 
the Scream 3 tour with Mario (2003), and the Source
 Awards with Mary J. Blige (2002).With more then 10 
years of experience in dance, Samuels is an established
dance instructor in Toronto, teaching hip hop classes 
and workshops across Canada, and is an aspiring 
music producer. Dancing has always been a part of 
Mark Samuels’s life and with Do Dat Entertainment, 
Toronto’s premiere dance company; he turned his 
passion into a career.  
 
 
 
Danny Davalos

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Mexico, Danny has been dancing since the age of seven and holds additional training in jazz, folklore and contemporary. Today however, Danny's specialty lies in the Hip Hop world and now holds an extensive performing experience background in Canada and the United States. Throughout Danny's career he has performed and choreographed for many Latin American artists such as Ricky Martin, Shakira, Thalia, and Pauline Rubio, to name a few.

Now residing in Toronto, Canada, Danny has had the chance to work with some Canadian artists as well, such as The Boomtang Boys, Annik Gagnioc, Love Inc., as well as Canadian Idol - Gary Beales, Ray Robinson, Keisha Chante, Jully Black and Shawn Desman. In addition, Danny has also had the opportunity to be apart of one of the most popular projects in Canada : Pop Stars (The One) as the main Choreographer in the show.  Along with dancing and choreography, Danny is the proud owner of O.I.P Dance Centre - Home of Do Dat Entertainment.
